Obviously Thorney How is several hundreds of years older than 4 years, but as the present owners we have been so very lucky to have been here since February 2011 when Thorney How was acquired from the Youth Hostel Association (YHA). You can read a little more history here.
There are 4 chances of winning, so please do make sure that you take part in them all. Winners will be announced after the end of February 2015.
To enter our competition you can either:

Our August Twitter competition prize winner enjoyed their stay with us this weekend.
“A place where you can be assured of a warm welcome. Yes Thorney How has a lovely homely feel and the staff have a great welcoming touch even when we arrived at 9pm.”

3 August 2012 / News / Prize
Congratulations to @shaunbades winner of our August competition via Twitter to win a weekend for two.
This could be you!
Shaun Bades has won our competition. By simply ReTweeting our offer and Following us on Twitter, Shaun was entered into our prize draw. He has won a two person room for two nights on the weekend of 31st August and 1st of September.
This is the last weekend of the summer holidays. We’ve reserved one of our 2 person private bunk rooms just for Shaun and a friend for two nights; equivalent value = £96.00
There’s lots to do in Grasmere and the local area, from:
- fishing to the Grasmere Guzzler beer festival
- a visit to Allen Bank to a hike over Helvellyn
- trying out an electric bike to a Poetry workshop at Dove Cottage.
We’ve just set up a new on-line booking system that we’d like your feedback on. You can try it to the top right of this page. Just select a check in date and the number of nights that you would like to stay, we’ve suggested two nights, then click search. This should then give you the number of bunks available in each room. If all goes well we’ll be adding this to our website as part of it’s upgrade too shortly.
The booking system is supplied by freetobook.com who first contacted us via Twitter. So far it seems to be a straightforward, yet well organised software application. We’ll know more once we’ve tested it for a while.
