Not everyone realises that there is a coherent network of hostels in the UK that all operate independently and are not connected with the YHA. Independent Hostels UK was established to address this and bring together a wide range of locations and accommodation types under one network.

They say:

“Independent Hostels UK is the UK’s official network of independently managed bunkhouses, hostels, backpackers, camping barns and group accommodation. With over 300 member hostels the network is comparable in size to the Youth Hostel Association in the UK (YHA plus SYHA).

Independent Hostels UK was established under grant funding from the government and is a self supporting membership body guided by a small committee of member directors.

IHUK works closely with other hostel networks worldwide including Scottish Independent Hostels, Independent Holiday Hostels of Ireland, Swiss Backpackers, German Backpacker Network, Hostel in Italy, Backpackers Spain, Backpackers Hostels of Canada and BBH New Zealand. IHUK also shares detailed information about the accommodation with national organisations such as the Sustrans National Cycle Network and the Long Distance Walkers Association.

To find out more about all the great places to stay in the network use our online search facility. This has scalable maps showing bunkhouses, hostels, backpackers, camping barns and group accommodation in England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Europe. You can search by name or location and you will quickly see that the accommodation listed offers great value with self catering, private rooms and flexible lengths of stay.

Full details of all the hostels in IHUK are available in IHUKs handbook, the long established Independent Hostel Guide, “available for purchase now”:http://www.independenthostelguide.co.uk/buy-a-copy-of-the-guide.php. “

Thorney How guest accommodation and bunkhouse is privately owned and managed by Taylor and Carolyn Nuttall since 2011.
